In this subsection you can indicate which messages (unread or new) should be shown on the app's icon. To adjust this setting, go to the folder list by tapping the  "Menu" icon, touch the  "Settings" icon at the bottom of the screen, and go to the "Badges" section.

Note that you can configure the icons for each connected mailbox independently.
